English King remains the favourite for the Derby largely due to having Dettori on board with trainer Ed Walker hoping for a first win in the race with his first runner. Dettori's aura secured him the ride over regular jockey the talented year-old Tom Marquand.
Owner Bjorn Nielsen has dreamt of breeding and owning the Derby winner ever since he grew up in Epsom and knows Dettori well as the Italian has partnered his great stayer Stradivarius to three successive Ascot Gold Cup triumphs. Should year-old Dettori triumph he will have won all the English classics at least three times. Kameko poses the greatest danger on form as he comes to the race as the winner of the mile classic the Guineas.
Camelot's trainer O'Brien's most favoured runner in the betting market is Russian Emperor even though first choice jockey Ryan Moore has opted for Mogul. The fairytale win, though, would be if Martin Dwyer won on Pyledriver trained by his father-in-law Willie Muir. James Courtney's loyal backer Peter Adderton says he expects the former Supercars champion to 'step up' this season.
Soon the 'Hey Siri' function will let drivers report road incidents with their voices while using Apple Maps and CarPlay. The Seven Network is set to unveil a high-profile TV line-up for its return to broadcasting Supercars this month. Is this a shadow of things to come for America? Formula 1 has announced it will drop the rainbow branding from its We Race As One campaign after updating its objectives for the initiative in PSA said in that Peugeot would return to the U.
Alpine is confident it can work with other Formula 1 teams to find seats for its young drivers in the future despite currently having no customer or affiliated squads. A single post on Facebook has generated thousands of inquiries into the collection, left behind by a longtime racer and Mazda rotary fanatic.
I was unlucky because I would have rode Scorpion in the St Leger. Fallon, instead, has won three Derbys and four Epsom Oaks. He has also won the 1, Guineas on four occasions and the 2, Guineas five times. That gave me a lift and horses can sense that.
Same with Ryan. Horses will run for them. I feel the same in the Guineas. Fallon rides his final race at Lingfield. Plucky Dip finishes second last. He grimaces outside the weighing room. The women want to be filmed by a TV crew. Alongside the battle of a great old champion, the horseplay and yearning to see their own faces on the big screen seems ridiculously giddy.
He suggests we drive over to the local hotel and talk more in the bar. The case was eventually demolished in the Old Bailey and Fallon was cleared completely on 7 December There was elation before, crushingly, it was announced that same day that Fallon had tested positive for cocaine after racing months earlier in France. The distressing News of the World campaign unhinged him. I was talking to Hughesie today and we said it should never have gone anywhere.
The BHA had a race steward from Australia saying he could find fault with the fucking races. Why did they have to go to Australia to find a steward who knows nothing about racing here? We ended up in the Old Bailey for nine weeks because this prick said he could find evidence. Two detectives got sunburnt down in Australia because they went to see this one steward. The whole thing was incredible. The police losing their logs and saying they got burnt? Honestly, from start to finish it was a farce.
Does he feel bitterness at the way his career never recovered? I come from nothing so everything I ever got was a bonus. Fallon weighed just five stone and had eight quid in his pocket when he turned up at a yard in Ireland with the dream of becoming a jockey. That usually takes a few days, even a week. But I just trotted to the end of the avenue and on the way back I found the rhythm. I picked it up quite easy. Fourteen years later he won the first of six champion jockey titles in England.
Life is different now — not only for Fallon but for most jockeys. The prize money is terrible. The boys are shaking their heads. My first ride at Del Mar was a winner. I will get rides in America and if I go back it will be to combine training with riding. Start small, chip away, expenses are much lower, prize money is so much better. As the light fades in Surrey the little champion looks up brightly.
You never know. Something good, something lucky, might turn up again.

In the end, Pretty Pollyanna did not return to Newmarket for a crack at the Guineas but she is now ready to make her seasonal reappearance at the Curragh which has excited many punters. Michael Bell is hopeful that the work done at home will allow Pretty Pollyanna to utilise her pace over 1 mile and that she will seriously challenge in the Irish Guineas.
It will take a very strong performance from any of the horses outside of the top two in the betting to win the Irish Guineas. It takes a pretty smart filly to win any classic contest but there are nevertheless a few that stand out from the crowd amongst the previous winners here. As of she remains the most recent filly to achieve the Irish Classic double of the Irish Guineas and the Irish Oaks. Al Bahathri followed up a promising two year old campaign by taking both this race and the Coronation Stakes in The smartest of his first six winners was undoubtedly the winner Imagine.
As of only two runners had achieved the English and Irish Guineas double. With seven wins in total between the years of and , it is one Hubert Hartigan who jointly leads the way amongst the handlers. Seven is the magic number for the leading rider too with Morny Wing being the man out in front. The leading owner will be somewhat more familiar to modern day racing fans than the most successful trainer and jockey.
She finished third in the English 2, Guineas on her last run but, whilst that was disappointing after being sent-off favourite, she may have just found the ground on the fast side. Her sire won the Irish 2, Guineas but she looks to have plenty to do to turn around the length she was beaten by Happily at Newmarket. Therefore, the worry is that she might be a non-runner but, if she does run, she must have a great chance.
Made it a hat-trick of wins when winning the Derrinstown Stud 1, Guineas Trial last time and she comes into the race less exposed than many of her rivals. Not without a chance in what might not be a vintage year for one-mile fillies. New Customers Only.
There was a bit of a celebration that night. He beat Streets of Avalon, who won the Futurity Stakes earlier this year, so it turned into a good form race. I had a share in Paternoster Row with Charlie Goggin. This would have been in August Then he won under the lights at Moonee Valley. He only won one more of his next 10 but he gave us plenty of thrills.
It was 18 years until my next winner over there. Back to Mandela Effect, he only had a short spring in It was a heavy track and his wheels spun a bit when they started to sprint. That became another good form race — Fifty Stars and Manuel ran the quinella and both went on to win Group 1s.
He won a nice race at Bendigo, which was a big thrill. I backed him in the Weekend Hussler Stakes at this meeting 12 months ago. Yeah, that was a tough day. He probably should have won that also. Craig Williams stayed on board and thought he had Gold Fields covered at the top of the straight. He was worried about the others, understandably, but then Gold Fields kept kicking and just held us out. That was a great day.
After the win he headed back to Tasmania and after a break won the triple crown down here. As a proud Tasmanian what was it like to have a horse win the three feature weight-for-age races — Tasmania Stakes m , Lyons Stakes m and Mowbray Stakes m?
It was fantastic. The highlight was winning the Lyons Stakes on Hobart Cup day. After those victories Scott put him aside with the aim of having him right for the Toorak Handicap. What do you think of his form this time in? Last start he was held up for all of the straight and was a bit unlucky ninth in the Rupert Clarke Stakes.
The colours are actually the same ones the great Malua started his career in. He won the Newmarket Handicap and Melbourne Cup And how do you think Mandela Effect will go this week? It is great to have a runner in such a big race. And after Saturday? Scott thinks he has staying potential but this is his target race. After Saturday he could maybe step out to a bit further.
He will get too much weight in races down here in Tasmania. The weight-for-age races are the only. I notice you bought his sister at the local Magic Millions sale earlier in the year. Has your daughter Alicia got the naming duties again? Mandela Effect has two other siblings — Reconquista and Galenus — but I can only see your name as an owner in Reconquista. Yes, Galenus was a bit more expensive and I opted out. Reconquista had an interrupted career and has been retired after one win.
How did you get involved in racing? A work colleague, Ross Burridge, got me into a few horses. Ross and I have stayed involved ever since. Inner Warrior in the Tasmanian Guineas in I also bred a Launceston Cup winner. Which is better, owning a big race winner or breeding one?
Winning a Group 1 with Mandela Effect might be a bit different though. He won at Hobart last Sunday and has now won four of Hopefully one day he can head over to the mainland and win. Did I notice another winner in the Mandela Effect colours last Sunday?
Yes, First Accused made it two wins from two. He won a race with a Tasmanian Breeders bonus attached on debut, then scored again on Sunday. The Tasmanian Government closed racing down for six weeks due to COVID, which was pretty disappointing given how other states continued on. I was in the. We can have crowds but with plenty of social distancing. It is one of the great views in racing, looking over the racetrack, across the Derwent River with the mountains in the background. And how is Tasmanian racing going?
It has enormous potential to grow. Tasmania is an ideal place to breed horses. This is the area that has the biggest room for growth. Horses like Mystic Journey, Mandela Effect and the unfortunate Hellova Street who died of colic last week all winning on the mainland are great advertisements. There have been a few teething problems as the Strathayr track starts to bed down, but I thought it raced well on Sunday despite a lot of rain. Hopefully with warmer weather coming it should continue to improve.
We have a big Carbine Club function and the Tasmanian Derby as a twilight meeting on the Friday and then the cup on the Sunday February 8. Racing in Tasmania is on a Wednesday night at Launceston and on a Sunday at all venues. In an ideal world would you rather race on a Saturday? Yes, in terms of getting crowds to the races. However, we need Sky Channel coverage and they can cover us better on a Sunday. How does racing go in terms of the environment? Most of the tracks have their own water supply and do their bit.
Racing is also a great employer all over the nation in both the cities and in rural areas. Randwick Saturday race 7 The last m was clearly the best part of his race in the Gloaming Stakes a fortnight ago. This race was chosen ahead of the Maribyrnong Trial, for which she was an acceptor last week. His last m It was the quickest time of the morning over m.
Her last m was timed in However, she stuck on gamely and held on for second with the winner, Scream Dream, only getting the upper hand late. Scream Dream has since run very well at her next start, placing behind the smart Rainbiel. Chapada will only improve up to the m he sees on Saturday. We were rewarded for our patience. Step 1: Ignore weight-for-age or set-weights races as this system is designed for handicaps. Set-weights-and-penalties races are okay, however. For the purposes of this system we are using the handicap weights.
Step 6: If still equal, take the one in the best barrier. Going well. Always runs well. May win soon. Looks close to another win. The question of which city has the better three-year-olds — Melbourne or Sydney — is a frequent topic of discussion at this time of year, but in the market has spoken. The advent of the Golden Rose series appears to be a major reason why. Drawn a little awkwardly but has claims. Give another chance.
Had every chance. Covered ground on turn. See website for details. Promoter Racing. Guineas gold — a brief look back Ah, the Guineas. What memories. Some are a bit obscure and personal. Red Anchor might have been as good as the other two but he lacked the longevity, injuring himself the autumn after his spring clean sweep and retired as a threeyear-old. Mick Dittman, in deep green livery that sat nicely against the blood-red coat of Red Anchor, cruised in third or fourth on the fence before a Grand Canyon-like gap appeared turning for home.
From there it was a romp. The trainer wanted him up there but … he was a stallion and a piggy stallion at that. He played up a lot in the barriers. I just rode him where he was comfortable and he got back to second-last. There was a lot of interference in the race and I missed it.
I gave him a dig about out. Drought got absolutely poleaxed and went back to last. Somehow by doing that I got past about 15 horses. I got right through on the inside and we won by a head. Second, he was a freak. He did nothing at stud and a breeding expert explained to me that this was because he had neither pedigree nor conformation. Our Maizcay led the race before falling in a heap metres from home. First, he was a champion New Zealand sprinter and they were.
The horse was Helenus and he was trained by Leon Corstens. Helenus was a bit hit-and-miss after that and eventually found himself at stud in Western Australia, where he became a darn good sire of stayers. Richards and Marshall had scratchings. She also trialled well in preparation for this race. Hugh Bowman pictured below takes the reins and Hungry Heart has drawn well 3. The race rated well, was run in quick time just 0. She should be ready to peak third up back to mares grade.
He settled second-last and sprinted sharply from the turn to win like a promising horse. The rise to metres suits him second up. From barrier three he should settle much closer and be there to pounce on the corner. The Group 2-winning mare will be hard to beat with better luck and in a competitive race appeals as a good each-way play.
There looks to be good pace here so he should be able to sit just off the speed and prove hard to hold out. Ben Melham returns to the saddle. If he can run up to his best form he should be hard to catch. Deep Force race 9 showed promise early in his career. Somerset Maugham drops from 58kg to Assuming he races as well as expected we can follow up on Aray of Sunshine later on the card. She caught the eye running on for fourth at her previous run and is back to her right level.
That win came third up over metres. She looks to have found a winnable maiden on debut and is worth a close look on an each-way basis. Phoenix Global and The Gauch have both come out of the same race and run very well at their next starts. Shenanigan City is a better horse at m, which is what he tackles here. She loomed up but peaked on her run and had to settle for third. She strikes a weaker maiden on her home track and will be hard to beat. Colonel was only warming up late there, which suggests he wants all of the m he sees here.
Expect to see him in town sooner rather than later. Looks suited by the rise to m and is one of the better bets on the card. Yes, great memories of the bonny mare Light Fingers and the great Roy Higgins. Craig Skelton Mornington Vic. As compared to a rocking horse, pony or mule? I looked up his beaten run and he was second to Showmanship. So is that a proper horse?
It was. His favourite track, you might think. But he has won nine at Roma and seven at Charleville. His trainer, Bevan Johnson, has done a remarkable job keeping Cowboy safe and sound. He has won at 14 different country tracks, from Goondiwindi down on the border to Clermont up near Mackay. The nine-year-old has been to the big smoke — once to Eagle Farm and three times to Doomben. But the son of Greenwood Lake goes where he can earn his owners and trainer a quid.
Last weekend he was off to Alpha. Good luck, Cowboy — 41 wins is just around the corner. Clinton Smith Tynong North Vic. Gary Goundrie Sydney. As for his idea that we should remove the barrier draws and to let the jockeys choose their own gate, I fear that the jury will be out for a long time. John Bansky Newport Vic. Pros and cons I agree with John Tutty that the topless barrier stalls used on some tracks in New Zealand are great.
On a visit to New Zealand more than 20 years ago I had the opportunity to examine close up a set of these stalls and their operation. As I recall, because there was no superstructure forming the stalls into a single mobile unit, each stall of the topless variety consisted of two independent partitions, the legs of which were slotted into permanent metal-lined holes in the track. Obviously these holes could only be located in a chute, and not in a section of the track on which horses raced.
Each partition had two hinged gates, ingeniously designed to swing, one to the left the other to the right, and synchronised to open simultaneously by remote control. Two rear gates on each partition were operated manually as normal after each horse has been loaded. However, as there was no superstructure, they were only portable by moving each partition independently out of the holes in the track, loading them on to a carrier or. The club intends having a number of education days with trainers and their horses before they start using them.
As my experience was a while ago, some improvements may have occurred. Perhaps a way has been found to eliminate the supporting holes in the track, and an easier process for moving the partitions. Shorter letters have more chance of getting a run. There were fairytales aplenty at Longchamp last weekend, but not involving Enable. Heavy rain became a feature of Europe as last week developed. A week ahead of the race one would have said that it was shaping up as a relatively uncompetitive Arc as only two horses were in singlefigure odds: the mighty six-yearold mare Enable, bidding for an unprecedented third win in the race, and the champion three-year-old filly Love. These plans, however, were blown out of the water two days before the race when Irish horse-feed manufacturer Gain announced that it had discovered that it had been dispatching batches of contaminated feed and that trainers who had used this feed should not have any runners for a few days.
Between them they had been set to have 11 runners in Group 1 races on Sunday. The blunder that has clearly taken place at the Gain factory is very hard to understand. The contaminant found in the feed is called zilpaterol, a manmade drug not licensed in Europe but used by some farmers in the US to put weight on cattle in the way that an anabolic steroid would do, although technically it is an adrenergic agonist rather than a steroid.
As it is not legal in Europe, it should not even have been in the country, never mind in the factory. Under the circumstances, it cannot have got into the feed through crosscontamination or environmental contamination. The ground was atrocious for the metre championship, but it is impossible to know whether that was a factor in her defeat.
She had, after all, previously shown top-class form under very testing conditions. Thereafter, the pair could only battle, finishing sixth and seventh respectively. This emboldened her connections to send her to France for the Prix du Cadran. She rewarded their boldness and their loyalty to year-old apprentice Joey Sheridan, who was not able to claim his allowance in the race by showing limitless stamina ploughing through the mud to get to the front in the dying strides and score by half a length, running the m in Haggas hat-trick One mighty Newmarket-trained six-year-old mare Enable might have failed in her bid to win a Group 1 race at Longchamp on Sunday for the third time, but later in the afternoon another was able to succeed in registering that achievement.
Luc Lagardere for colts and the Prix Marcel Boussac for fillies. The majority of the good horses in France are trained in Paris and, of those that remain, nearly all are trained in either Deauville or farther down the Atlantic coast in southwest France at Pau. Under the circumstances, it was a particular achievement that the winners of both these races are trained in Marseilles on the Mediterranean coast, by Frederic Rossi and his nephew Charley Rossi. Primarily, Tiger Tanaka will go down in the history books as the first Group 1 winner in France ever ridden by a female jockey.
Even leaving aside the gender of her rider, Tiger Tanaka provides a fairytale. Fortunately, she was not claimed after any of these victories. She then was finally given a rise in class, and she coped with it magnificently, finishing a close third in the Group 2 Prix Robert Papin at Chantilly. She did even better on her next outing, providing Marcialis with her first stakes success by taking the Group 3 Prix Francois Boutin at Deauville.
Now the fairy story is complete. He is clearly an outstanding twoyear-old, on a heavy track anyway. His victory was superb: he strolled home by eight lengths in a time 1. The Mullins family is racing royalty in Ireland. The late Paddy Mullins was a very successful trainer of both flat and National Hunt horses.
All his sons rode in races, with Tony being the most successful, most notably sharing the jumps premiership in with Frank Barry. Saturday, though, saw Tony Mullins take centre stage with an equine Cinderella: the five-yearold German-bred Princess Zoe, a daughter of the Montjeu stallion Jukebox Jury who landed a gritty victory in the Group 1 Prix du Cadran over metres. Until the end of last year Princess Zoe was trained at Dresden in Germany, running in middle-of-theroad handicaps.
Run this year as the final leg of the Triple Crown, the Pimlico Stakes produced an epic race. When Rachel Alexandra beat Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird in the Pimlico in , the fact of a filly winning the race was regarded as a once-in-a-century occurrence.
It has now happened again, merely 11 years later. Ridden by Robby Albarado, Swiss Skydiver showed magnificent courage on Saturday to continue a hugely rewarding year in which she has raced nine times at nine different racecourses and won five races — two at Grade 1 level, two at Grade 2 and one at Grade 3. Brava, Alegria The other great performance by a filly or mare last weekend came in Japan, where the four-year-old Deep Impact mare Gran Alegria put up a brilliant display to take the Grade 1 Sprinters Stakes by two lengths, running the metres in PR: Tony, happy 80th birthday October 8.

He was always great for a quote as well. You took over as chief racing writer at The Age during this period. I did. Tony Kennedy was before me and he taught me a lot.
I just carried on from him. One of your racing writers during that period was the great Les Carlyon. What made him such a good writer? He was a brilliant writer. He wanted to be a writer. He was a great help to me. Had you been to all the Melbourne Cups in that period? What was it like seeing Makybe Diva winning three straight? I was lucky enough to go to Royal Ascot and see her win there. Then Winx wins four Cox Plates. How did that come about? I used to love taking quaddies. The label came from an old colleague at The Age. It was more a sarcastic one — because I took so many of them rather than being any good at them.
What do you think of The Age these days? We had a wide range of views from all areas and it had a point of difference from the Herald Sun. And the racing media in general? It barely gets a mention in the daily papers. We have better television coverage than before, which is a positive though.
Tony, thanks for the chat. Cheers, Paul. Injury struck after just one run in the spring of and she was off the scene for a year. Ciaron Maher and David Eustace took over the training of Kenedna for her next preparation, which was her most successful.
Hoofnote: Victorian jockey John Allen rode Kendena in all but one of her group race victories. Since that aforementioned maiden win back on June 16, the US-bred gelding has worked stylishly through the grades, winning three more races, most recently the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes a fortnight ago. Freedman has a healthy opinion of both and believes they are more than capable of measuring up. Keen Dean thriving in new role Dean Krongold is the extra pair of eyes and ears established trainer Jason Warren had been searching for.
Krongold, 38, experienced a huge change in his work routine when he joined Warren. He went from looking after a stable of 10 to co-ordinating one that consistently operates with around 50 in work. Krongold explained to Winning Post this week he had a good grounding to take on the new challenge.
Krongold said the partnership came about after he struck up a friendship with Warren following a move from his original training base at Kyneton to Denistoun Park on the Mornington Peninsula. Warren trained from the complex at the time. BenTrianda than happy to look at all the recommendations and different perspectives, which is great.

Carlton wins its 10th VFL premiership by conjuring a remarkable second-half revival, resulting in another Collingwood Grand Final loss.
Two weeks later, on the same date as this year, the Caulfield Guineas will be run on October Extraordinarily, the odds-on favourite is a filly. The aforementioned breeder is Ken Cox. From his past seven rides, four have won and another two have placed. He also has a great recent record in metre races at Randwick — four wins and two placings from his past eight over the course. His stud manager is the emerging genius George Smith. The filly is Dual Choice.
Because of the devastating Lara bushfires around his own property, MacNamara arranges for the resultant filly to be reared at Stockwell. He notes instantly that she is different. This filly, like her dad, is a chestnut. George immediately likes her physique and is equally impressed by the way she walks and moves. George spends hours watching his foals and yearlings run and race each other in the paddocks.
This filly, he detects, is driven by a fiercely competitive spirit. George suggests that his boss buys her when she goes to the Melbourne yearling sales. He has three wins and a second from his past five rides on the mare. In six runs from barrier five or better he has four wins and two placings. Dual Choice ends the season with a third to Baguette in the Golden Slipper.
At her first three-year-old run, she beats the older sprinters at weightfor-age in the six-furlong m Freeway Stakes at Moonee Valley. Now for a huge challenge — downing the colts and geldings over a mile metres in the prestige Caulfield Guineas. It is not. She is bought back by MacNamara for closer to the prizemoney figure than the original sale price. Surround is the next and only filly since to win the Caulfield Guineas.
Given that the Thousand Guineas is now run on the same day, there might not be another. George Smith is alive and well, living in Sunbury and happy to recall the Stockwell days. He remembers that post Dual Choice, Mr Cox is more amenable to holding on to his picks of the Showdown youngsters. So subsequent stars such as Tontonan and Toy Show run in the prominent, familiar cerise and yellow colours of the Cox family.
George even manages to wangle a share of Tontonan. As many other owners and trainers will subsequently attest, he deserved it. Zahra Pike Does Fallon feel less confident today? But in the big races I feel comfortable and at ease. I love riding them. The big stage is what matters. The only blot on my copybook, really, is the St Leger.
That was unfortunate because every year the Champion Stakes was on the same day as the St Leger.
